WATCH WITH SOUND

In their ongoing quest to celebrate and shine a spotlight on cultures of excellence, Rémy Martin teamed up with GRAMMY-award-winning producer Jermaine Dupri and the Harlem Writers Guild to honor Voices from Harlem. The project saw hand-selected poems from the Harlem Renaissance nearly 100 years ago paired with modern-day poets with roots in Harlem, with musical melodies created by Jermaine Dupri as the backdrop. The project’s goal was to honor and bring poetry, specifically the poetry of Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance, to the forefront. William Collins once said, “poetry is a history of the human heart,” and few places in this world encompass that history like Harlem does through the art created in that historic time period.

Featured are The Gift to Sing by James Weldon Johnson, Mother to Son by Langston Hughes, Harlem Wine by Countee Cullen, and My Little Dreams by Georgia Douglas Johnson, each with a unique sound but a similar origin story; all with roots in Harlem, New York. The backdrops to the poet’s voices are four different musical melodies created by GRAMMY-Award-winning producer Jermaine Dupri, as a tribute to the golden age of African American arts that has deeply inspired his personal journey as a musical artist.
